The Brief
The client wanted a garden that felt private and restorative — a green retreat that could be enjoyed daily as well as used for entertaining. Set within a heritage building and largely shaded, the space needed to make the most of limited sunlight while respecting the architectural context of the property.
Key requirements included:
A calm, intimate garden for relaxation and entertaining
A planting-led design suited to shaded conditions
A sense of lushness and depth within a compact space
Materials and furniture that complemented the heritage setting
The Design Approach
Rather than working against the shade, the design embraces it. A layered planting scheme was developed to create depth, texture, and a richly green atmosphere, drawing on tropical-inspired foliage that thrives in low-light conditions.
Carefully chosen materials, finishes, and furniture were used to support the planting and enhance the garden's tranquil character. The layout encourages both quiet moments of retreat and sociable gatherings, creating a space that feels intimate, balanced, and cohesive with the apartment.
The Outcome
The completed garden is a serene, immersive outdoor space that feels like a natural extension of the home. Lush planting, subtle structure, and considered detailing combine to create a garden that offers year-round interest, supports relaxed living, and provides a calm retreat within the city.
